BWSF Honors Vanessa Thomas Smith, A History-Making Woman

Throughout the month of March we have been celebrating Women’s History and Black women. To further celebrate Black women in excellence, board member Shannon George sat down with Vanessa Thomas Smith, first Black Female ringmaster in American Circus History, to ask her questions and gain insight on her career and achievements.

What was your first night as ringmaster like? How did you feel?

Vanessa describes her first night as ringmaster as “amazing”. Despite her nerves considering this unexpected opportunity, she made history as the first Black woman ringmaster in American Circus History- a historical moment she was not immediately aware of when she made her debut.

What was the transition from dancer to ringmaster like? What advice would you give to someone who is looking to transition their career?

Vanessa was a professional dancer with Philadanco before she started a career as ringmaster. To help her make the transition, she trained and ran track to help her build stamina needed for her to excel in her new role and to fully embrace the character. She tells people who are looking to transition their careers to be open to and understand what opportunities are available and to honor those who have come before you.

Can you tell us about your proudest moment of your career thus far?

Vanessa was proud when her son Jonathan realized she was great, not only to him, but to the world.

What is your favorite book authored by a Black woman or podcast hosted by a Black woman?

Vanessa enjoyed the books Becoming by Michelle Obama and Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. She also likes to listen to the podcast GirlTrek.

What advice would you give to your 18 year old self?
Vanessa would tell her 18 year old self “Don’t be hard on yourself! Continue to let the Divine guide you more than what you think you know.”
