RENOVATIONS BEGIN AT HISTORIC TANNER G. DUCKREY SCHOOLYARD
Efforts to enhance schoolyards in PA Senator Sharif T. Street’s 3rd District
To celebrate the end of school and beginning of summer, The Big SandBox (TBS) and The EMIR Healing Center will host a community event with Street Soccer USA (SSUSA) at the Dr. Tanner G. Duckrey schoolyard. Food, family and basketball!
The event marks the start of ambitious renovations of the community basketball courts and schoolyard at 16th and Susquehanna streets, with construction beginning this summer. Part of Philadelphia sports culture for more than 50 years, legendary street players honed their craft at these courts for years before joining the NBA.
Facing closure, this historic community asset is being restored after ten years of perseverance from North Philadelphia residents. Partnering with Dr. Tanner G Duckrey School, Senator Sharif T. Street, U.S. Senator Bob Casey, and the Sheller Family Foundation, TBS secured federal, state and local funding for the $1 million project.
"A new playground at Tanner G. Duckrey would be a cornerstone for our students' social, emotional, and physical health, enhancing their overall well-being and boosting their academic success by providing a vital space for play, interaction, and growth," said Tanner G. Duckrey Principal David Cohen.
