Black Women in Sport Foundation Announces the Addition of Shannon George to the Board of Directors
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Black Women in Sport Foundation (BWSF) is excited to announce the appointment of Shannon George to the BWSF Executive Board. George’s primary focus is on fundraising and programming for the organization. A member of the Executive Board and the Executive Committee, she began her role in July 2020.
“We are excited to welcome Shannon to our board,” said Nnenna Akotaobi, BWSF Executive Director. “She brings tremendous leadership in areas such as board experience, strategic leadership and fundraising that are vital to our future. Her expertise will bring welcome energy and commitment to enhancing our mission to better serve our stakeholders.”
An ideal fit for BWSF, George brings a combination of unparalleled experience in fundraising, community leadership and athletics. She is a passionate community servant with a 20 year history of service and commitment to her community. Her persona is a testimony to the benefits of a lifetime of sport participation.
“Outside of my family, service is my purpose,” said George. “As a lifelong athlete the mission of this organization perfectly aligns with my passion and desire to uplift our underserved communities. I am very excited to be part of this prestigious organization.”
George has honed her skills as a community leader with many individual acts of service and as a member of impactful organizations such as the Links, Incorporated, Montgomery County PA Chapter, where she is currently serving her 2nd term as Vice President of Programming. George is also recognized for organizing the highest grossing fundraiser to date, for the Links of Montgomery County, as their 2018 fundraising Chair.
George is a lifetime lover of and an active participant in many sports. This has afforded her the opportunity to compete and live an active and healthy lifestyle while also fellowshipping with other like-minded individuals. She has competed in a wide array of sports such as softball, golf, volleyball, track and field, and most recently tennis where her team placed 3rd in the 2017 USTA National Championships. During her high school years, George was a National level track and field athlete at Cincinnati Princeton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1989, she was coached to the Ohio AAA State Championships as an individual champion as well as a team championship by Coach Mae Faggs (Starr) Olympic gold medalist (1952). Shannon was also inducted into her High School’s Hall of Fame (2010).
George was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a 1995 graduate of The Ohio State University with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. She currently resides in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania and shares her home and her love with her husband Stuart, two college age sons (Brendon and Nigel) and her Saint Bernard Sasha Fierce.
George’s many additional interests include, but are not limited to, horseback riding, gardening, dog training, reading, keeping up with friends and family along with ample time to relax and reflect.
